    An Overview of Academic Writing
In academia, writing is conducted in several sets of forms and genres. Academic writing is usually written in an impersonal and dispassionate tone, targeted for a critical and informed audience but the academic writer may also find an audience outside via journalism, speeches, pamphlets etc.
Academic writing has an objective stance; clearly states the significance of the topic. Academic writing is organized with adequate detail so that others scholars may try to replicate the results.
Academic writing consists of a number of text types and genres. Many writers have called for conventions to be challenged while others suggest that some conventions should be maintained.
Academic writing is based on analysis – the process of breaking down ideas – to increase one’s understanding. It uses deductive reasoning, semiformal voice and third person point of view.
Quoting, paraphrasing and summary are important in an academic writing. One must put the main thoughts or ideas into one’s own words, but not necessary to include the “main points”.
The reference page and parenthetical citation are necessary in essays that contain ideas that are not based on background knowledge and are not commonly known; in other words, this is information that comes from source material.
Science students use the APA reference style sheet, one of many style sheet conventions, as a guideline for accurate formatting of academic papers.
